Curl Starved Publicity

This is with my recent experience that the curl needs publicity,

Allthough curl has great framework platform which developer like me will surely love a lot,

But what is hindrance to curl in going forward and creating credibility among the user (client) and developers. Seldom anyone in RIA world is aware with curls presence .Client has doubt about the credibility of company and that?s why they are not ready to come forward and asking for curl, their

Concern is valid, My view on curls marketing is that company should position themselves in such a way that people across the globe should get to know more about the company, their credibility and choose curl for their RIA platform, positioning themselves in other country than Japan will surely give them good customer base. So this is the time when curl should think out of the box and target other country and make the RIA world feel their presence. Hope curl must be doing thinking about all my above concerns and aligning and positioning to compete to the ever increasing RIA world.

Above article is not a question and  I wanted to post it as a blog, probably we don't have enough right to write blog.

anybody have any idea on creating blogover curl site , please share it with me..

Thanks

Rajiv

Re: Curl Starved Publicity

Just one example: for 6 months we have had no mention at O'Reilly's RIA site

Books are appearing on most any RIA-related topic but not Curl for RIA ( we may underestimate the impact of some key books such as the Ruby "Pickaxe" book)

On the internet, our visibility in European countries in the local languages is dismal: perhaps we are doing better in trade publications or at conferences/shows.

In India I do not see that we get any play through Sonata (perhaps someone can correct my perception on that one.)

I think we need to address SquirrelFish+HTML5 and frameworks such as Cappuccino head-on.

What might help is the announcement of a single major enterprise project in Curl.  This was exasperating in recent years for the Smalltalk environment because major banks were not forth-coming about their internal software development strategies and were doing their hiring only through contractor and consultant agencies (so no visibility on Monster or Dice etc.)  Without some visibility of work at J.P Morgan one might be excused for thinking Smalltalk dead in the USA.  In the case of UNICON, only US government freedom of information laws give a clue that a major institution uses that language - and only as a budget allocation, if I recall.

That being said, I have never seen a Curl career position advertised in English for a corporate IT department and have never heard of an opportunity through any IT placement agency active in the USA.

Re: Curl Starved Publicity

While Curl is owned by SCS a large ($1.6B) Software and Systems Integrator in Japan it is small compared its main rivals Abobe and Microsoft.  With a limited budget we have gained good visibility in the US over the last 2 years.  This includes being named RIA technology of the year in 2008 by InfoWorld.  We have over 400 customers world wide providing real enterprise solutions in large companies like Toyota, SONY and Panasonic. Over the last year we grew the Curl business and will have more interesting use cases to share in the near future.

We have been working with Jeffrey Hammond at Forester to help us position Curl in the RIA landscape.  From Jeffery's inquiry profile Curl is in the mix when enterprises consider RIA technologies.  We expect Curl will be part of an RIA Wave report from Forrester later this year.

Unfortunately with the current economic climate the Curl marketing budget does not support expensive advertising and trade show sponsorships.

But let's not let that dampen our enthusiasm. This developer center represents THE Curl community and we should all take it upon ourselves to spread the word about Curl.  Curl has a great story to tell with very compelling proof points. We have a wealth of marketing material that each of us can use to spread the word. I have been on hundreds of sales calls and I can tell you that our story is well received and people readily see the benefits of Curl through our demos and case studies.

Lets all work together to get the word out about Curl. Follow the lead of active community members like Friedger Müffke, Robert Shiplett and Utkal R. Pradhan

If you see and opportunity to comment on an article or blog post please do so.  If you see an opportunity to present Curl at a regional event please do so.    If you need help with putting material together, let me know I can help.

So go forth and spread the word about Curl.

Re: Curl Starved Publicity

I have a new initiative at http://cms.aule-browser.com to explore another server-side solution for generating Curl for CMS and CBT/WBT using PHP.

My bias is to use so-called server-side "headless" Smalltalk or a "smart" language such as erlang or ObjectIcon, but there is a lot of PHP+MySQL out there.

If Drupal proves suitable, this would be better as a team effort as it requires a templating framework. A group or project here at developers.curl.com would be helpful in that case.

Re: Curl Starved Publicity

Thanks

I hope this CMS idea proves to involve more Curl than PHP ;-)

When I look at other (more promising) frameworks there is a lot of work to do from the get-go because they are so tightly coupled to HTML or XHTML (and often needlessly so.)

With PHP I can just flip the Http header to text/vnd.curl on my own templated pages that actually push out Curl.

For starters this will be on the order of "configure the menu" and "configure the sidebar" (proof of concept - not of suitability of this particular framework)

Re: Curl Starved Publicity

I also had this idea, I started working on this independently (i wanted to write my blog in curl so i was tring to port wordpress and drupal in curl). Me and my friends have done some hacking in drupal, joomla and wordpress. It would be good if we have a drupal like CMS in curl.

My vote is to Drupal and i am willing to work in this and i will also request to start a parallel project for curl port of wordpress too.

thanks.

Long live the curl.
